Last Chance: Sign up For Free Healthy Eating Course

The Central Connecticut Health District is offering a free course on healthy eating. The deadline is approaching!

We all do it. We all forget to mark our calendars for special events in our daily lives. So Patch has created a weekly feature that highlights a community deadline that is quickly approaching.  This week, the Last Chance column reminds us that Monday, April 9, is the deadline to sign up for the Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD).

This free, educational course designed to assist individuals in managing healthy and affordable eating habits. The program will consist of four sessions, each covering a different aspect of nutrition management. Topics include how to shop on a budget, how to read food labels, and how to eat more fruits and vegetables.

The Health District received funding from the Connecticut Department of Public Health to present this program. The class is open to residents of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield who have an interest in changing their eating habits, incorporating more fruit and vegetables into their diets or grocery shopping for healthy, family-friendly foods on a budget.

Debbie Brinckman, RD, CDN, will discuss healthy eating and nutrition management through the use of the USDA recommendations from the new ChooseMyPlate program. Participants will receive free materials, recipes and sample menus. At the last class, participants will tour Stop and Shop to learn how to read food labels and what to avoid when shopping. Please arrive in the store by 6:15 p.m.

Pre-registration is required. RSVP by April 9, 2012 to be part of this class. All participants must commit to all four classes. To register for the program, residents should call the Central Connecticut Health District at (860) 721-2818.
