A cold, windy evening was in store for Berlin High’s first night baseball game of 2013, but the hometown fans warmed up a bit after a base-loaded walk drawn by Kyle Naples in the bottom of the 6th that drove in the go-ahead run in a 7-6 victory over visiting Bristol Eastern.

It was the seventh time in eight 2013 games that the Redcoats have played a one-run game.

Berlin used its five hits and eight walks issued by Bristol Eastern pitching to good advantage to plate seven runs. The opposition’s generosity with walks was reciprocated by the Berlin defense, which committed nine errors, leading to five unearned runs against starter Mike Veronesi.

The Redcoats built a 4-3 lead after three innings, helped by RBI hits by juniors Dan McLeod and Dante Vasi. Bristol Eastern responded with a three-run 6th on a double and five Berlin errors, taking a two-run lead.

Berlin’s decisive three-run rally in the 6th combined five walks and a sacrifice fly by Greg Konowski. Reliever Jared Gallagher gained the pitching victory by slamming the door on Bristol Eastern in the 6th, working a total of two scoreless innings. Offensively.

Dante Vasi had two hits for Berlin and Mitch Williams drew three walks.

The Redcoats, now 5-3, face Platt High Wednesday at Zipadelli Field, Sage Park, at 7:00 p.m.

The Berlin Redcoats (0-5) “were totally overwhelmed by LL power Glastonbury”  - this is the exact same quote from last years match. Last year, the game score was 84-5 – this year 84-12.

Junior Dan Rombola played well against senior Reid Risinger, singles finalist at the 2012 CIAC State Open who will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall.

The team plays next at Simsbury on Wednesday.
