New Timberlin Assistant Pro Has Got Game

Future plans include hopes to play on PGA Tour

You can understand why Timberlin Golf Course Assistant Golf Professional Jacob Halligan is not real happy with his decision to move to Connecticut.

The new assistant has never worked or played much golf above the Mason-Dixon line so cold weather, rain, snow and sleet are not the norm.

Despite the horrendous spring weather in the state, Halligan has adapted to the weather and has already formed a solid bond with the golfing community at Timberlin.

Halligan is originally from Taylor Mill, Kentucky. At his high school you could start playing varsity sports in sixth grade so he is seven-year varsity letterman starting in sixth grade in golf. He finished in the top-five at the state tournament his senior year and holds the lowest season scoring avg. and lowest individual round score in school history. He was also was a five-year varsity letterman in baseball, two-year in basketball, one-year in tennis.

Halligan attended Saint Leo University on a golf scholarship and was a four year starter on the team while earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Business. During his junior and senior seasons at Saint Leo, he was named captain and helped lead the program to its highest national ranking in the school’s long history.

Throughout his college career he was named to five “All Tournament Teams,” set a single round school scoring record, served on the NCAA Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and was named Northern Kentucky Golf Association’s Player of the Year. He was also recognized as an NCAA Academic All-American for achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA while having a scoring average that was among the best in the country.

Jacob has had held many positions in the golf industry. These positions include being the First Assistant at Eagle Creek Country Club in Crittenden, KY, Assistant Director of Tournament Operations for the 7-Up Junior Golf Tour and Tournament Director/Assistant Junior Golf Director for the Middle Atlantic PGA in Stafford, VA.

Jacob’s teaching background includes countless one-on-one lessons and instructing multiple Play Golf America days. He has also assisted in running junior clinics in conjunction with the Nationwide Tour as well as leading a clinic for Army Personnel at the PGA Tour’s Tiger Woods AT&T National event held at Congressional Country Club. Jacob has a teaching philosophy that adapts to each individual instead of trying to teach one common swing.

He holds two course records, a 62 (-10 under) and a 63 (-7 under.)

"I received a golf scholarship to St. Leo and I chose it because of the warm location just north of Tampa, FL. and the excellent practice facilities in Lake Jovita Country club - site of PGA Tour Q-school," Halligan said. "I am taking the job at Timberlin because I was really impressed with how friendly the people I met on my week long visit to check out the job were. I wasn't able to see much of the course because of the ridiculous amount of snow was on the ground, but the area was nice and I felt like it would be a good fit for me.

"I will bring a vast history of working with junior golfers. I am eager to get started because I have been told the junior golf at Timberlin is some of the best in the state. I will do my best to make sure it stays that way and I will make it my priority to provide instruction, development, and creating opportunities for them to compete in order to learn 'tournament golf.'"

Halligan has played on many professional mini-tours in Florida and the eastern United States.

"I also have gone to the four-level PGA Tour Q-School tournament the past two years," he said. "Despite not earning a tour card, I performed well enough at the second level to earn a two-year exemption, meaning I get to skip the first level, and I hope to go back this fall to try again."
