End of an Era: Nearby Mortensen's Restaurant to Close Doors

The business will still produce ice cream, but the diner is closing its doors to the public.

One of the landmarks on the southern end of the Berlin Turnpike in Newington is closing - and it's a decision that will likely bring memories for many in Berlin.

Mortensen's Restaurant, located less than a mile from the Berlin line near Deming Road on the turnpike, has announced that it will shut it's doors at the end of the year. The business will continue to produce its well-known ice cream even after closing.

"It is with mixed emotions that after 37 years in our present location we have decided to close Mortensen’s Restaurant and Ice Cream Shoppe, and make a change,” said owner Rod Mortensen in a press release. ”But there is good news. We will be re-opening as an ice cream shop to continue serving our award-winning homemade ice cream.”

According to Mortensen, the full-service diner will alter the menu and the business will be renovated and reopened as an ice cream shop.

A report from the Hartford Courant states that the family-owned business will also continue to operate a second location already open in Cromwell. Most of the restaurant will serve as a new location for Moe's Southwestern Grill, the report states.
