  • Why did you start your small business in Berlin, with history and what spurred your entrepreneurial spirit?

MidState Air Compressor was founded in January 2010 to provide sales, service and repair for all makes and models of air compressors to a variety of private, commercial, and industrial businesses as well as municipal fire, police and rescue organizations. A woman owned company with many years of business experience, owners Carol and Sal Calvo realized there was a need for a flexible and responsive company to serve the unique requirements of this specialized market. Operating from a 3,000 square foot industrial building on Deming Road was an easy decision because the Calvo’s are very active in their community volunteering at the local schools, cub scouts, and the Volunteer Fire Company. Most of their employees live in Berlin are active in community also.

  • When people think of your business, what sets you apart from other?

What sets MidState apart simply is our personal service and attention to detail. When you call MidState for assistance, you don’t get an answering machine and a list of voicemail numbers. You will talk to a person ready to respond to help you with your questions and help fulfill your needs.  We feel we provide a high level of service at a competitive price with special focus on personal attention to customers exceeding the competition’s efforts. We are confident we have achieved this level in our short time in business.

  • What are you doing to attract and retain your customers during the economic recession?

At MidState we consider ourselves problem solvers not just another business commodity. We add value to our business transactions by providing high quality convenient and comprehensive air compressor products and services at an affordable price. In these hard economic times we really try to keep our overhead costs down so we can give our customers the best prices we can. The internet has really helped us attract new customers because they are not happy with their current providers. Our service and prices are what’s keeping them our customers. We also ensure our existing customers are satisfied with our work and serve as their partner to solve daily challenges with their entire compressed air system. Our customers are also our best references who refer us to new customers.

  • What’s the most important ingredient in your success?

Clearly, the key to our success is attention to detail and providing superior, friendly and knowledgeable service to our customer base. We have chosen industry leading manufacturers to represent and take great pride that these companies consider us a high quality dealership for them. Consistent follow through and accurate completion of work is our hallmark and we take the necessary time to consider all customer needs and provide accurate and complete explanation of the services when finished. No job is too small and our extensive client base has been developed one satisfied customer at a time.

  • Where would you like your business to be in five years?

We would like to expand our business into purchasing our own building in Berlin. A key part of that is to employ more people to help us maintain our high quality level of service and commitment to our customers. We would also like to see our sons be more involved in the future of our company and to continue being involved with our community.
