A New Director For YMCA

Person with ties to Berlin chosen to lead New Britain-Berlin YMCA.

After an extensive national search, the Board of Directors of the YMCA of New Britain – Berlin has named Rich McCarty as their new Chief Executive Officer, effective June 6.

“We are very pleased to have Rich join our organization and are very excited about the possibilities for the New Britain and Berlin communities,” said Rebecca Karabin-Ahern, Board President. The search was conducted with the assistance of the YMCA of the USA in a process which began in March of this year.

McCarty re-joins the YMCA movement after several years as the director of a multi-million dollar capital campaign for YWCA New Britain. Previously, he served in financial development roles at the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs and with his alma mater Fairfield University, from where he earned a BS in Marketing and an MBA in Operations Management.

He also worked for both Aetna and SNET for over a decade before entering the non-profit arena. Rich and his wife, Anne Marier (formerly of Berlin), live in Plantsville with their sons, Richard (14) and Samuel (10).

In November 2010, the Board of Directors, in consultation with the YMCA of the USA, hired Interim Director Bob Young, a retired YMCA CEO, after the position was vacated in October.  Young’s led the Board in an in-depth study of the YMCA’s financial and operational challenges through a Mission and Cost Analysis.

The Board of Directors is fully committed to the highest standards of governance and oversight, and will partner with McCarty in making an impact in the community. Said McCarty, “Through expanded program services, and collaboration with other New Britain and Berlin organizations, I am excited to lead the YMCA to a great future.”

The YMCA of New Britain-Berlin was founded in 1883, and McCarty is just the 11th CEO in those 128 years. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the YMCA is open to all in the community – men, women, boys and girls.

Financial assistance is available to qualifying individuals and their families. In addition to outstanding Child Care programs in both New Britain and Berlin, the YMCA offers summer camps in both communities. At the New Britain facility on High Street, there is a gym, racquetball courts, climbing wall, pool, fitness center and a residence for men.
