Veteran Memorial Bricks Available for the Holidays

The brick pavers program offers area residents a chance to say thanks to veterans and commemorate their loved ones who have served.

The following was submitted by Peter Galgano on behalf of the Veterans Commission in Berlin.

The Berlin Veterans Commission is proud to announce that they are still selling memorial bricks for the “Heroe’s Walk” at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park. The park was dedicated on Flag Day, June 14, 2010.

The sale of the memorial bricks is ongoing and is a special way to honor veterans past and present.

We have just celebrated Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and we are approaching the Holiday Season. What better way to honor and remember the veterans in our life. They do not have to be a Berlin resident.

Veterans Memorial Park is located by Stop and Shop, on Veterans Way in Berlin, between Massirio Drive and Farmington Avenue. A monument and flag to each branch of the military services has been placed in a circle. There are benches at each monument where one can sit quietly, enjoy the beauty of the park and perhaps give thanks to those who have kept our country free.

Anyone who is interested in ordering a brick to bear the name of a veteran who has served, either living or deceased, can get an application from any Veterans Commission member. Applications are also available at the Town Clerk’s, or Town Manager’s office. You can also click on the PDF file attached to this article to obtain an application. It can be downloaded, printed and mailed to Town of Berlin, Attn: Veterans Commission, 240 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT 06037.

The only criteria are that the veteran has obtained an Honorable Discharge and has a copy of form DD214; this will be necessary to purchase a brick. The cost is $80.

Proceeds from the sale of the bricks will be used to insure the proper maintenance of the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park and all the veterans’ memorials in town, as well as the care of the flags flying there.
