Parks and Recreation Summer Program Registration Will Open May 13

Many programs on tap for children and adults this summer.

The Berlin Parks and Recreation Department is beginning registration for Berlin residents on Monday, May 13, for all Summer classes/programs and non-residents on Tuesday, May 28.   The office hours are as follows: Monday – Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to  4:30 p.m. and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to  7:00 p.m. and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

There is limited enrollment for programs.  The town website, www.town.berlin.ct.us  has information on the summer programs that will be offered.  Berlin School students may obtain the brochure through their virtual backpack on the www. berlinschools.org site.

The Summer Program formerly the Summer Playgrounds will be held this year at Griswold School and Pistol Creek (in place of Willard School).   Join us for the newly revamped, full day summer program for children 5 – 12 years old as of June 24, 2013. The program will run from June 24 – August 9 from  9 a.m. to  4 p.m.  The cost of the program for children 5 to 12 years old and Jr. Counselors 13-15 year olds is per week and an additional fee for field trips.  Jr. Counselors must apply for the program, be interviewed and  accepted before registering.

Pool passes are on sale for residents only with free lessons as part of the pool pass program.  

Berlin Dolphin Swim Team for Juniors  ages 12 and under and Seniors ages 13- 18 can register as well. New Britain and Newington residents only can register for the Dolphin Swim Team beginning on Tuesday, May 28.

Skyhawks will run a Flag Football program from June 24 to June 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for 7 to 12 year olds. 

Tiny Hawks a soccer and basketball program for 3 – 4 year olds to be held July 15 to July 19 from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.  Mini Hawks a soccer, basketball and baseball program for 4-7 year olds to be held July 8 to 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All Skyhawk programs will be held at McGee Middle School fields, 899 Norton Road.  Information can also be found on the Skyhawk website www.skyhawks.com  For these programs you may register with the Berlin Parks and Recreation Department or with the Skyhawks but must fill out a Skyhawk  registration  form.    

If your child loves Legos then they might be interested in Pre-engineering with LEGO program  for ages 5 to 7 year olds.  The program will be held July 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  and for older children 8 to 11 years  Engineering FUNdamentals with LEGO to be held July 8 to 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. both classes held at the Berlin Community Center.    

Arts Discovery Camp in its second year with the Parks and Recreation Department will be held July 8 to 12 or July 29 to August 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 P.m. for 3 ½ to 7 year olds as of the start of the camp. 

An exciting introduction to the arts with dance and movement, music and rhythm, arts and crafts, acting and stories.  Creative developmentally appropriate activities centered around the theme of the day.  

Fit Toddlers for 2 and 3 year olds will be offered on Fridays, 9:30 p.m. -10:15 or 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. starting on July 12 for 4 weeks Karate for 4-6 year olds (Little Ninjas) Tuesday and Thursdays from 4:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. or Beginner Karate for 7 – 12 year olds will be held on Mondays, 5:30 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. and Wednesdays 4:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at First Class Martial Arts, 158 Mill Street programs will begin the week of July 8th.  

Tennis Lessons will be offered again this year by the Tennis and Fitness Center in Rocky Hill.  The sessions  will run Monday through Thursdays, Session 1, July 1 to July 11, Session 2, July 15 to July 25 and a Mini Session July 29 to August. 1. Classes are held at the BHS outdoor courts and in inclement weather at the Tennis and Fitness Center in Rocky Hill.

Youth Basketball for boys and girls that have completed 3 – 8th grade.  The two sessions are held at Berlin High School, Session 1, July 15 – July 25 and  Session 2,  July 29 – August 8,  Monday to Thursday with Fridays as a makeup  date.

Adult Classes offered include Core Blast Pilates on Mondays beginning on July 15 to August 26 from 6 to 7  p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m. at the Berlin Community Center Two different Pilates classes will be offered on Wednesdays from July 17 to August 28, Bar Physique Bar Pilates class from 6:15 – 7:00 p.m.  and Power Up Pilates from 7-8 p.m.  at the Berlin Community Center. Gentle Yoga will be held on Tuesdays beginning on June 4 to July 9 from 7 – 8:15 p.m. at the Berlin Community Center . TaiChi  for Osteoporosis and Fall Prevention for ages 60 and older , Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Session A:  June 12 to July 24  and/or Session B: July 31 to September 11 held at the Berlin Community Center.

And for the family dog, Dog Obedience Classes will be held at Pistol Creek.    Kindergarten Puppy Training for puppies 2 /12 months to 6 months held for seven weeks beginning Thursday June 13 to August 1 (no July 4th) from 6 – 7 p.m.  Basic Dog Obedience held on Tuesdays for seven  weeks  June 18 to July 30 from 6 – 7 p.m. and Better Basic Dog  held on Wednesday, from June 19 to July 24 from 6-7 p.m. 

Six Flag New England good any day tickets and Connecticut Science Center Good Any Day Tickets will be on sale beginning Monday, May 13.  Limited tickets are available.
