Literacy Volunteers of Central CT Sets 11th Annual Scrabble Challenge and Silent Auction

Event to raise money for adult and family literacy programs throughout the region

On Thursday, April 25, Literacy Volunteers of Central CT (LVCC) will host its 11th annual Scrabble Challenge and Silent Auction, a fundraising event designed to raise money for its adult and family literacy programs. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.

Individuals are encouraged to sign-up and participate by themselves, or as a team. Participants play in teams of 6 to 10, working cooperatively on one board with the potential to win prizes. The event also includes a family style dinner, silent auction, teacup auction, raffles, a spelling bee, coffee, dessert and a cash bar. Cost to sign up is $50 per player and is tax deductible.

“Our annual Scrabble Challenge is an opportunity for the community to come together, have some fun, and support all of our organization’s tremendous volunteers and students,” said LVCC Executive Director Darlene Hurtado. “Funds raised from the event support our tutor training programs and resources, as well as some of our specialized literacy programs, which allows us to continue to be a resource for adults in the region who are looking to advance their English skills so that they can continue to grow become even better citizens themselves.”

Founded in 1978, the LVCC provides small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring to over 400 adults in the communities of New Britain, Middletown, Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Kensington, Marlborough, Middlefield, Plainville, Portland, and Southington. Tutors are all volunteers and receive high quality training, free of charge, prior to becoming a Literacy Volunteer.

In addition to the adult literacy program, LVCC recently founded the Family Literacy Center, which provides educational programs to low-literate mothers with children under the age of 8 who need to learn English to support their children’s success in school, or to help them earn their GED. The center provides childcare for approximately 20 children while mothers are in class.

Sponsors of this year’s Scrabble Challenge include Webster Bank, N.A., Dutch Point Credit Union, Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas - Northeast Utilities companies, The Herald, Shop Rite of Southington, and Priority Graphics, LLC.

LVCC is still seeking additional corporate sponsors or corporate teams to participate in this year’s tournament, as well as donations for the silent auction.
