Curbside Leaf Collections Slated for Late October; Three Weeks Scheduled

You asked for it, here it is: The Berlin Public Works Department is scheduled to begin pick-ups on Oct. 28 and hopes to complete all runs through the community by the beginning of December.

The leaves have begun to change and fall, a sign of the season in New England, but as trees get ready for the impending winter season, it can make quite a mess of local yards. Not to fret - the Berlin Public Works Department will soon be coming to your neighborhood to help take those leaves away.

The town has announced the leaf collection schedule for the 2013 season, with curbside leaf pick-up beginning on Oct. 28 and extending over three weeks in little more than a month before finally ending on Dec. 6. During this time, the department will also conduct a special extended hours on Saturdays at the town's transfer station at 19 Town Farm Lane, according to a Lecia Carter.

"Leaves must be placed in bags at the curb prior to your regularly scheduled trash pick-up day. Residents wishing to have leaves picked up at the curb must put leaves in biodegradable paper bags and leave them at the curb on their regular trash day during the specified week," Carter said in a press release.

Plastic bags will not be permitted.

The three week program will take place from Oct. 28 - Nov. 1, again from Nov. 11 - Nov. 16 and lastly from Dec. 2 - Dec. 6. These dates are subject to change in the event of extreme weather.

Additionally, residents seeking to drop off the bags of leaves themselves may do so during the extended hours at the transfer station, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays between Oct. 26 and Nov. 30.
