Berlin's Thomas deRito Earns The Rank of Eagle Scout

Berlin High School graduate will be attending WPI this fall.

Thomas Lorenzo deRito, a member of Berlin Boy Scout Troop 44, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouting.

Tommy joined Cub Scout Pack 13 in the second grade. He earned many belt loops, activity pins, and in 2006, the Arrow of Light. It was during this time that he formed some of his earliest and still lasting friendships. In the fifth grade, he joined Berlin Boy Scout Troop 256 where he worked his way from the rank of Tenderfoot to First Class, attended summer camp and spent a week canoeing more than 50 miles down the Delaware River. He also spent many weekends camping, even in the cold winter months. Tommy continued his Scouting at Troop 44, where he volunteered for many community services projects, camped, hiked, skied and participated in numerous other activities.

Tommy earned 36 merit badges while being a Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader and Instructor. He was elected into the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s national honor society by his fellow Scouts and spent more than 100 nights camping. He earned the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII Roman Catholic Religious Emblems.

As his Eagle project, Tommy directed the repair, refurbishing, painting and overhaul of every bleacher and seating area at the Berlin Lion’s Club Fairground. The Fairground hosts many community-wide organizations, due to the harsh New England winters the bleachers and seating areas required extensive repair and repainting for aesthetics and safety reasons. Thanks to Tommy’s leadership and organizational skills plus the volunteer efforts of Troop 44; additional projects were also completed at the Fairgrounds.

Tommy resides in Berlin, son of Anthony and Helen deRito, brother of Matthew and Christopher deRito, and grandson of Stanislawa Supinski. He is a BHS Class of 2013 graduate attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall where he plans to pursue Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Mathematics.
