The shorthanded Berlin wrestlers got more shorthanded when they traveled to Montville for a dual match Tuesday morning.
Shawn Sullivan, one of the top performers for the Redcoats, lost by injury default when he dislocated his elbow during his match.
Despite what might be a serious loss, Berlin got pins from Mason Powers at 215, Ethan Greider at 103, Kevin Pirruccio at 119, Will Matuszak, Mike Fiorillo and Jake Eliades at 125 to beat the host Indians 42-27 and improved to 3-1 on the young season.
The biggest win of the day came when Rich Schlicting upset Montville's wrestler at 112, Kylee Fricke. Montville's Fricke won 30 matches last year and was the top seed in Class M at 112. He ended up placing at that weight division.Schlicting hung tough and got a late takedown to force overtime. He then took down the Montville wrestler again in OT for the upset win.
"It was a huge win for us," said co-head coach C.J. McCormack. "It got the whole team pumped and we wrestled really well all match long."We're 3-1 but we're a very resilient bunch. As our freshmen and sophomores get better every day there is no telling what can happen now that we have a full line-up going forward."
Sullivan could be out for a while depending on the severity of his injury.
Other winners for Berlin were: Scott Zagorski and Rick Mullins.
Zagorski is a senior who wrestled as a freshman but not for the last two years. He has been a pleasant surprise according to McCormack.
Berlin is at Glastonbury Thursday morning at 9 a.m. for another tough CCC battle.

Thanks for a great article today.
It's nice to know we have someplace to go for such in-depth HS sports... including wrestling!
I'll certainly be passing the site out to other Berlin wrestling families.
