Viewfinder: Luminaria Ceremony The Emotional Highlight Of Relay

Participants remember, celebrate and honor loved ones affected by cancer.

The luminaria ceremony was the emotional highlight of the Berlin 2012 Relay for Life Saturday night.

Before the ceremony, participants had the opportunity to buy luminaria bags to be lit at 9 p.m. They could decorate and write the name of the person they were honoring or remembering on the bags. Co-chair George Millerd said that 640 lumniaria bags were purchased.

The musical group The Songbirds, sang beautifully during the ceremony. At the end of the cermony, with the bags lit around the track, a bagpiper led the walkers around the track. Each walker had their own candle lit for the lap or laps.

The lap and ceremony are the emotional pinnacle of the 24-hour Relay. Many are brought to tears remembering loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer.
