Salina Pleased With Veteran's Park Grant Approval

He says Phase II of project can now go forward.

The Town of Berlin has been awarded a $500,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) Grant as announced by Governor Dannel P. Malloy this week.  The grant funds will be utilized to construct Phase II of the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park project.

Berlin Mayor Adam Salina said, “I would like to thank Governor Malloy and our State Delegation for their support of this project. The concept of creating a Veterans Park in our downtown began almost 10-years ago. This grant will allow the Town to finish this project and complete the redevelopment of a brownfields site that was once our former Town landfill. Given the fact that these improvements are being made on a piece of property located between the VFW and American Legion offers our community a great sense of pride as we properly honor our veterans. Without this grant, it would have taken the Town years to complete the park – now we can begin in the spring.”

Phase II of the park construction will encompass approximately 1.5 acres of property fronting on Massirio Drive. Improvements in this area will include a small parking area, walkways, seeding of lawns, plantings, a picnic area and an area improved for outdoor games and activities that may include bocce courts and horseshoe pits. A final plan for the games and activities area is still being developed.

“We have already witnessed wonderful activities in Phase I of the Veterans Park beginning with dedication of the Veterans Monuments earlier this year as organized by our own Veterans Commission – and the outstanding turnout that Raising Berlin had when they held their Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on the park grounds right after Thanksgiving. This park will be enjoyed by all of our citizens and the completion of Phase II will only enhance the improvements we have made downtown,” the Mayor said.
