Red Sox Sign Jesse Carlson

Former Berlin High School lefthanded pitcher Jesse Carlson signed with the Boston Red Sox. 

Carlson was released by the Toronto Blue Jays recently after suffering an injury in his throwing arm last year. 

According to his brother Cory, Jesse Carlson signed a split contract, where he will have every opportunity to make the major league club out of spring training. If he does not make the major league club, he would go to AAA Pawtucket. 

Carlson played at Berlin High School, graduating in 1999, and the University of Connecticut before being drafted by the Detroit Tigers. 

According to MLB.com, Carlson missed the entire 2011 campaign because of a left rotator cuff injury. He was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason and was one of the club's top candidates to be non-tendered.

The 30-year-old has spent three seasons in the Majors en route to an 8-8 record and 3.63 ERA in 141 1/3 innings. His best season came in 2008, when he went 7-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 69 appearances. He earned the Blue Jays Rookie of the Year Award in 2008.
